What Can You Research?

The Route 66 Research Tool is built specifically for travelers planning a drive on the Mother Road. Here are some of the kinds of questions it can help you answer:

  • What are the best stops in Oklahoma on Route 66?
  • What is the history of the Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari?
  • Are there any must-see attractions between Flagstaff and Kingman?
  • What should I know about driving Route 66 in the winter?

Whether you are just starting to plan or filling in the details of a trip that is already taking shape, the research tool gives you a knowledgeable starting point without having to dig through dozens of websites.

How to Use the MAP

Using the tool is straightforward. Select a filter to determine what type of stops appear on the map: all stops, Landmarks, Nature, Food, Quirky, Towns, Lodging, or Museums. You can also filter by state by selecting the state you’re interested in from the drop-down menu on the right.

Click on any of the stops listed and pop-up will appear with brief and information about the site and a link to much more in-depth information on our website.

Use Both Planning Tools Together

The Research Tool pairs naturally with the Personalized Route 66 Itinerary Builder — also available on this site. Use the Research Tool to explore your options and learn about specific stops, then take what you’ve discovered into the Itinerary Builder to turn your ideas into a complete day-by-day plan tailored to your travel style, group, and schedule.

Both tools are free to use. They are currently in beta — feedback is welcome and improvements are ongoing.
