Route 66 in Oklahoma
Oklahoma contains more miles of Historic Route 66 than any other state — over 400 miles of the original highway pass through the Sooner State, from the Kansas border in the northeast to the Texas Panhandle in the southwest. This is Route 66 in its most authentic form, with well-preserved alignments, active small towns, and some of the highway’s most storied landmarks. Oklahoma’s Route 66 is home to the Threatt Filling Station in Luther — the only Black-owned gas station on the historic highway — as well as Lucille’s Gas Station in Hydro, the Blue Whale of Catoosa, and the towering totem poles at Ed Galloway’s Totem Pole Park. With so many miles to explore and so much history to uncover, Oklahoma rewards travelers who are willing to slow down and take the long way through.
