Route 66 in Texas

Route 66 crosses the Texas Panhandle in a nearly straight shot from east to west, covering about 180 miles of wide-open sky, flat prairie, and some of the Mother Road’s most iconic landmarks. The Texas stretch includes the art installation Cadillac Ranch just west of Amarillo, the stunning Tower Station and U-Drop Inn Cafe in Shamrock — one of the most architecturally remarkable buildings on Route 66 — and the historic Phillips 66 Station in McLean. Amarillo serves as the hub of Texas Route 66, with the Big Texan Steak Ranch, the midpoint marker in nearby Adrian, and a string of classic roadside stops in both directions. The Panhandle landscape may be stark, but the history and character of the Texas section of Route 66 make it one of the most rewarding drives on the entire highway.
